The most common product labelling errors that occur in the retail industry include undeclared allergens, incorrect formatting, unsubstantiated health and nutritional claims, and missing information such as storage instructions, nutritional information, or quantitative declarations.
In a recent study undertaken by the Food Standards Agency in the UK, 21% of retail products were found to have labelling errors, whilst 13% were found to be non-compliant due to compositional issues.
All product labels must be clear, legible, and accurate in order to be compliant. Different labelling regulations will apply depending on the product category – for example, food product labels must include details such as the name of the food, a full ingredients list, allergen declarations, nutritional information, use by or best before dates, storage and preparation instructions, and the name and address of the manufacturer. Labelling requirements will also vary by country of sale.
